Mediums Talking to the Dead – How Spirits Communicate

Communicating mind-to-mind in the spirit world.

SUMMARY: Article by Craig Hamilton-Parker about Spirit World Telepathy and how mediums use telepathy with spirits to gain information about the Spirit world. For more information about what the spirit world is like read Craig Hamilton-Parker’s best-selling books about the Spirit World and developing your powers to become a medium.

Getting Your Message Across

When you first arrive in the spirit world it will take you a little while to get used to using telepathy. At first it will appear as if people are talking to you normally, since this is the method of communication that you are used to. However, you will then notice that it only appears that they are talking. You are “hearing” their thoughts as spoken words. Similarly, you will notice that your own thoughts and feelings are completely transparent. The first spirit people you meet will “hear” your words as the thoughts form in your mind and before the words leave your mouth.

The same form of telepathic communication is used to communicate with the material plane. Unfortunately, you will find that most of the people you may try to communicate with are completely oblivious to your communications. Some may interpret your thoughts and sense, see, or even smell you. However, if you want to get a detailed message across, you will need to find someone who is telepathic and, most importantly, is aware of the telepathic signals from you and your spirit friends.

MEDIUMS COMMUNICATING WITH SPIRITS OF THE DEAD

A medium is used by the spirit people as a vehicle for communication between the two worlds. Onlookers assume that the medium is able to see the spirit person standing near them and can hear their voice speaking to them. Some mediums encourage this belief by saying things such as “I can see so-and-so standing by you” or “he is saying such-and-such.” This is not actually true.

Mental mediums perceive the spirit communicator inwardly. When we say we hear a voice, it is an inner voice that we hear. You may hear a tune inside your head or remember the voice of someone speaking–this is very similar to the way mediums hear the spirit. The name given for this type of spirit communication is clairaudience. Intuitive clairaudience is a subtle condition which can be described as listening-in to soundless words. The medium is aware of an impression of hearing, as word forms come into consciousness.

Similarly, a medium feel sensations when a spirit is communicating. For example, I may feel the physical conditions they had when on earth. I will sense which sex they are or get impressions of their personality. This sensing is called clairsentience. Finally, I may see mental effigies showing the events from the spirit person’s life, see their face, or perhaps see pictures of places that were important to them. This perception of images is usually called clairvoyance. (Strictly speaking, clairvoyance is defined by parapsychology as an aspect of extra-sensory perception in which an object or event are perceived without the use of the known senses.)

How Do Spirits Communicate?

How  the Dead Communicate with Mediums

When you are dead you may get the opportunity to communicate through a medium. A little learning now about the art of spirit communication may help you a great deal when you enter the next life.

A medium cannot make a spirit person communicate with them. We have to open our awareness and see what comes. I am not like an open telephone line to the other side. What happens is a form of telepathy, not between me and the person with me but between the person in the spirit world and me. I “see,” “hear,” and “feel” the spirit–you will remember that we call these faculties clairvoyance, clairaudience, and clairsentience. By putting these impressions together I am able to build a picture of the communicator and prove that the human personality survives death.

HOW WOULD YOU COMMUNICATE WITH A MEDIUM?

If you were a spirit person now, what would you say to someone you loved to prove that you are actually you? Imagine you find yourself on the spirit side of life and are able to use your mind telepathically. Suddenly you realize that you are aware (“hear”) the thoughts of a medium asking his or her spirit guides for help in communicating. You may even sense the medium’s anxiety about getting the facts right. Surrounding you, the medium’s spirit guides and helpers are ready to help you project your thoughts–to use your mind to influence the medium’s mind.

When you send a thought to the medium, you quickly learn that he or she is not a clear channel. Although you can communicate with full clarity telepathically with other people in the spirit world, it is a difficult process communicating with the living. You may say (or rather think) “My name’s Jack,” but as soon as the thought is received, the medium’s own mind alters it.

“Mac?” the medium’s mind offers as message. “Is this part of the name? Or someone who used an Apple Mac computer? Or loved Big Mac hamburgers?” You immediately realize it is not going to be as easy as you thought. In a way, it’s like the party quiz of a spoken message passed down a long line of people. By the time the last person gets the message, the meaning has almost surely changed beyond recognition. This is a particular problem for mediums who are just beginning, or psychics who have had no or little mediumistic training. As mediumship skills advance, it becomes much clearer whether words and impressions received are actually spirit directed or figments of the self.

AN OPEN MIND

Fortunately, communication between the worlds is not always as bad as the example given. Sometimes, if a medium is completely open and keeps a still mind, it is possible to convey thoughts with clarity. However, you will soon discover–the medium’s spirit guides will help you–that it is easier to plant ideas into the medium’s mind using feelings and images than words and numbers. You need to project your “personality” into the medium’s mind so he can relate to his sitter the type of person you are. Once this is accepted, you can also give him easy-to-see images or pictures of places and scenes from your life. What pictures and impressions would you give to prove that you are, indeed, you and not someone else?

The spirit guides will be aware of the medium’s interests and knowledge. For example, the medium may love music and have a wide musical knowledge. If this is the case, you may be able to project to him your favorite tune, or one of the tunes played at your funeral. A medium with a good knowledge of music is more likely to “get” the tune you are giving him. Similarly, if the medium has a good sense of direction and knowledge of geography, you may be able to more easily show him places that were important to you in life. A memory of the streets of Paris, France,  may be recognized by the medium, who is then able to name this city as being significant to you.

The famous spirit healer Harry Edwards likened mediumistic communication to a violin: “If the instrument is a poor one, it is reflected in the musical tones that come from it. The result also reflects the musician’s intimacy and knowledge of how to use the violin. Give the master violinist a superb instrument, and the result is far different. Every good instrumentalist has to know his instrument, the feel of it, and this can only come through usage and experience. It is just the same with mediumship.”

Given the inherent difficulties associated with spirit communication, what could you provide to, as much as possible, specifically identify you as the spirit communicator? Supposedly, you can’t give your usual basic information (name, address, identification number) because the medium’s mind is not receptive to this type of information. With the communication limited to sensations and visual impressions, what could you give to the medium?

THE LIMITATIONS OF MEDIUMSHIP

You would have to work within the limitations the mediumship naturally imposes. For example, the medium may be able to sense whether you were a man or a woman when on Earth. You could also easily project feelings of your stature and your physical mannerisms. The medium may even mimic these unconsciously as the sitting progresses. Similarly, you could give the impressions that you felt before you died. You may be able to project sensations that describe the progress of your illness and your passing. If there was an accident, you may be able to give the impression of traveling at great speed before a crash, falling from a height, or being hit by something. This type of impression is more easily perceived by the medium and translated into meaningful messages to the sitter. Of course, since your bodily death, you are free of pain and disease but the reality of it is likely to be something that is still very much on the mind of the sitter. Most importantly, evidence you are able to give about how you passed over can stand as proof that it is you communicating. You may also be able to give the sitter reassurance that you are now free of suffering.

While you are communicating, it is up to the medium to keep his mind as clear as possible and not interfere with or try to make sense of the impressions being sent him. I have noticed, in my mediumship, that things go awry as soon as I attempt to “take hold,” interfering with the impressions I am getting. When I, in the midst of receiving mode, try to make logical sense of the pictures and sensations, I fall over. Quality mediumship is an uninterrupted, uncensored flow of information. As I jokingly, and rather grossly, tell my pupils: “Accurate mediumship is like verbal diarrhea! Just let it flow.”

Talking to the DeadTalking to the Dead is not like in the movies

Proving the Survival of Your Personality

Your personality doesn’t go though a massive transformation when you go to the spirit. Actually, you stay comparatively unchanged. Some of your cherished beliefs may be undermined, but the fundamental qualities of your personality remain fixed. Sadly, you will not become a demigod, even though your loved ones on earth may begin to idealize you as such–no matter what they thought of you when you were with them–since now you have seemingly all-knowing messages to pass to them from the beyond.

No, grumpy old Uncle Bill will still be grumpy old Uncle Bill when he gets to the spirit world. If he was a grumbling old fart in this life he will remain so in the world beyond. The human personality doesn’t change very quickly during our earthly life and there are no sudden transformations either when we enter the spirit state. We may become more aware of our faults and have a clearer insight into ourselves and the mistakes we made during life, but the human personality itself remains relatively unchanged.

How would you communicate from the Spirit World?

If you think about your own nature, how much have you changed since you were a teenager? You may be a little mellower in your behavior but the fundamental qualities that make up your personality probably haven’t changed a great deal. It takes “spiritual” effort to bring about a metamorphosis of the personality. Changing ourselves into more spiritually aware beings is, in my opinion, the reason we have been given access to earthly bodies. This is the aim of most spiritual disciplines, and for most people the changes within only one lifetime are small.

You can imagine how much more difficult communication gets if grumpy old Uncle Bill is the spirit communicator. Not only must the message get through the interference of the medium’s mind and the blocks created by the sitter’s own aura, but we also have to get Uncle Bill’s participation. He may be very stubborn and not like being asked to speak. Similarly, he may not have said much in life and is not especially inclined to be more talkative from the spirit plane. Too, many spirit communicators can become quite shy about speaking out!

If you ever try communicating through a medium when you are dead, you will soon realize that it is a tricky business. In addition to the personalities involved, you have to slow your astral vibration to “sink” to the earth plane. You next have to attune your consciousness with the mind of the medium. This spiritual overshadowing is a difficult astral art that may need practice and instruction from the spirit helpers of the medium. It is also a strange experience to the newly dead to feel your inner world blend with the inner world of the medium, who becomes aware of your whole personality and earth memories. (Think mind-meld.) It’s a job to keep any skeletons in the closet when communicating by telepathy!

The Unborn Self

In order for telepathic communication to take place between someone in the spirit world and the medium living on earth, it is necessary that a common state exists for them to work through. Some Spiritualists and mystics have called this the “mirror mind.”

Nobody knows for certain how consciousness is created or sustained. From the brain’s part, consciousness does not appear to be limited to any one place in it. It appears to be generated by the whole brain working together. Some scientists believe that the idea of consciousness and free will are, in fact, an illusion. For example, it has been discovered by measuring brain activity that the intention to do something comes “after” the brain has already decided to do it. The unconscious parts of the brain make decisions before “you” do. Our behavior is therefore guided not by free will but by subconscious processing. Professor Susan Greenfield claims “The feeling of “you”–the individual in your head–could well be the most impressive trick the brain plays. Somehow, the brain creates the illusion of a conscious self in control of its actions, while the true controlling force is the subconscious.”

Understanding Mediumistic Perception

The medium’s view is quite different. The brain is an organ of perception for creating images from the sensations that come from the five senses. It makes sense of the material world by generating images of reality. In many ways, the brain is similar to the computer I am using to write this book. If the computer goes wrong, or gets a virus, then my words may be destroyed or jumbled. If things go really bad, the machine may crash or become completely unusable. However, “I” am not the computer. The computer is my means of processing and communicating information and ideas. Add a modem and camera and it becomes a means of perception as well. The brain is an immense organic computer but “I” am not the brain.

I have already spoken about telepathy, the ability of people to share thoughts through something other than the normal five senses. In your everyday life, you may “know” when someone is about to telephone you, or you may sense a person’s mood before you see his or her face. If you are proficient at telepathy, you may be able to perceive much more detailed information. This would show that thought is not limited to the confines of the brain but can extend beyond it. Telepathy is a fact, and there is a great deal of proof to show that human consciousness can exist beyond the body.

Extra-sensory perception

Extra-sensory perception and out-of-body experiences illustrate that it is possible for consciousness to exist independently of the body. My own view is that the brain is just our doorway into the material world. Human consciousness is not limited to the brain but extends in all directions. The extent of the reach of consciousness may be limitless.

Mediums believe that we are not prisoners of the brain. We are free. When we die, we live independently of the brain as, even now, part of us lives independent of the body. A portion of our consciousness is unborn and exists permanently in the spirit world. It may be the source of our sense of identity. I believe that I am able to do mediumship because I am in touch with this part of my being. I can blend with it simply by looking within myself.

Recently I slept over at a friends house after her family from out of state had visited. Her mother had passed 20 years earlier. While sleeping restlessly I was aware of a photograph in my mind. In my dream a lady told me she was my friends mother, I had never seen a pic of her. The next morning I awoke and told my friend. She said she had no pics of her mother but I described her accurately. Then the mother jumped into my head insisting that I relate messages to her daughter. I argued with the spirit, I didn’t want to but eventually gave in. While giving her the messages I was in a trance like state and my left palm was up and my right hand was in a position as if I was writing, but without paper, it was moving without me meaning to. All of my life I’ve been gifted, but this was the first time this ever happened where a spirit pleaded with me to tell someone something. And the first time it was someone besides my own family member. Why were my fingers moving as if I was writing. Also during the reading I became emotional and felt her sadness and guilt about checking out so early.

All forms of spirit communication need to be carefully verified to prove that they are true and nit just from the psychology of the unconscious. This is why it is best to develop your gifts withing an organisation such as Spiritualism.

My wife speaks to me in her sleep. I believe it is my deceased father talking to me. She answers questions I have in my mind and repeats words of importance in her outward breaths. I have also at night had words come out of my own mouth answering thoughts or questions I asked myself before sleep. I m not sure where this is going .

Interesting but I think you would be better visiting a Spiritualist Church or seeing a good medium to get a message. What you are describing could be a spirit communication but there are many potential pitfalls that could be caused through misinterpretations of what may be being said.

I lost my beautiful daughter little over a year ago she was murder by her husband I’m having a hard time with her death I can get a grip I miss her and love her so much I’m just so lost now in order for me to keep going on. I need to know she is OK and for her to know I love her very much I’m so sorry does she hear me when I’m talking to her I just need to no she’s okay and not in pain anymore and is she up there with my dad and her sister and uncles so I can and make it and go on.

    • Craig Hamilton-Parker Aug 5, 2016, 11:05 am

I’m sure we can all feel the pain and grief in your words Iani. Spiritualism and other spiritual movements have given great comfort to many by proving beyond a doubt that life goes on beyond the grave. This is demonstrated through mediumship and requires no new beliefs or changes to your religious beliefs. It is the truth. You should look into this and get some personal proof. Some first steps would be to maybe visit a spiritualist church or we also have free help in our online community and also through our free events.

    • Alan Aug 5, 2016, 2:38 pm

I am sorry for your sadness. I have found a way which is not difficult, to send a message of love. Just visualize the loved one, say her name in your mind and feel love in your heart for her. This is important, not to send your feelings of grief or sadness. Remember her as you loved her with happiness and send her, from your happy thoughts, a message that you are OK and see her at peace. You may not get a message back, no matter, but be sure she will receive it.

I see super-clear visions of people who have passed. They walk into me regularly. I can describe them head-to-toe even through body language and activity. I don’t speak to them directly but I could tell you about them. What do I do with this? Is this mediumship?

    • Craig Hamilton-Parker Jun 14, 2016, 4:33 pm

It can only be proven to be mediumship if you can have what you are seeing verified by someone else. For example if you saw their dead grandmother and the information you relayed was an exact match.

I am trying to strengthen my ability. I’ve had this ability all my life but was afraid of it and put a wall up to it until a very close family member died a year ago. She has guided me through so much of my fears that when I read your website I was relieved to see that this is how other mediums communicate as well. I now am open to when a spirit is trying to get my attention and sometimes when the connection is made it is as if someone can hear my thoughts. I started writing messages down. Some communicators are very shy but curious, because out all of the people here in this world going about their lives, you can “see” them. I feel that I’m like a light bulb in the darkness for them. I have given all of this my own terminology so excuse me if it seems a little confusing.

    • Craig Hamilton-Parker Jun 1, 2016, 2:07 pm

Very few potential mediums develop on their own without the help of a development circle. I suggest you track one down.

  • John Joseph Scully May 26, 2016, 11:22 pm

My wife passed away last November and I was terribly upset about it. I refuse to think that she has passed away and that I will meet with her again. As time passes I get depressed that she’s gone and I will not meet her again. I hear about Mediums that they can speak to the spirits but I was advised not to visit Mediums as this could make my depression worse. I would like to know if its ok for me to talk to a Medium? Thanks

    • Craig Hamilton-Parker Jun 1, 2016, 2:17 pm

If you meet a medium who can give you rock-solid proof of life after death then this will give you comfort. Many people are ignorant of just how positive mediumship can be to help people through their grief. It is important you find the right medium though. I suggest that to start with, you simply visit your local Spiritualist Church on a Sunday at 6:30 pm to watch the service and demonstrations of mediumship. This will help you to understand how it all works and you may get some personal proof too.

Recently my ex committed suicide. Me and him had a very deep connection when we were together. I would dream he called to say I will be at your place in 4 mins and I would wake up with a ringing in my ears and a few minutes later him knocking at the door. This is an example of our connection: we were high school sweethearts with a passionate and turbulent relationship for five years until he pushed me away as he really got into his party lifestyle and lots of attention from other women. That was six years ago, I am engaged with a child now and living abroad. He died on the 30th of April in the early hours say around 2 am. All of the 29th I was sick as a dog. I thought I must be depressed for the level of sadness I was feeling was physically painful. I have always loved him on a level but knew he didn’t feel the same so I focused on my fiance who is a good man that loves me. I attended my exes funeral and have since felt him talking to me and even woke up to him standing next to me yelling “I’m here!” I have been having him pop into my head a lot. The other day a mutual friend called and said she felt i needed to know that my ex was still very much in love with me. This info has been so hard to take in. And I am unsure.

You need to let your emotions settle before visiting a medium or a Spiritualist Church. I feel that much of what you have written is about your own unresolved emotions. Once they have settled I suggest you seek evidence of survival of the spirit after death. This will give you a greater insight into your life here on earth as well as what happens after death.

I have lost my father in January 2016. It was a sudden and unexpected death without illness. My dad was coming to meet me as I was 9 months pregnant. In midway only, he died and the reason declared by doctor was cardiac arrest. I didn’t even see him for last time as in India pregnant ladies are not allowed to go near a dead body. I miss him a lot. He was hardly 60 and a very fit good-looking man. Seven days later I gave a birth to baby boy. I didn’t know that time whether to be happy on my son’s birth or to cry on my dad’s death. I want to know would it be possible to communicate with his spirit.

    • Craig Hamilton-Parker May 16, 2016, 9:37 am

A good medium will give you evidence of his spirit and that he is happy for you and your child. A death is painful but it is reassuring to know that we survive into the next life and are aware of the people still here on earth.

  • Walter Whitehawk Thorne Mar 16, 2016, 8:26 pm

Communication With The Living Dead. We right now here on Earth as I type. We are not born yet, not until we transcend from a caterpillar into a butterfly, metamorphosis or dead to living reality at our ultimate oneness with All the Universes that we are connected with through our DNA.

  • Jessica Rogers Mar 14, 2016, 6:57 am

Wow GREAT website! it definitely explains a lot and answers some questions I still had after recently seeing a medium. I was wondering about pets. Do they cross over too?

    • Craig Hamilton-Parker Mar 22, 2016, 11:57 am

Yes. We mediums sometimes give proof that pets have survived death in our messages from human spirit communicators. Take a look at my videos on the site and you’ll see some good examples of this.

I would love to know if the spirit of a suicide bomber has communicated to say if they have actually been received into paradise as a hero by Allah

I have run into a brick wall with my genealogy research. Is it possible to contact a dead ancestor to get information about their family tree?

    • Craig Hamilton-Parker Jan 25, 2016, 4:43 pm

Yes. There are a few videos posted on this site in which a family tree is correctly described. In one case I told a woman about her family tree and a newly found will from Canada. When the reading was finished she showed me the document that she had carried with her to my demonstration. Follow the links to our YouTube pages for the full video.

I enjoyed reading your web site I really need to reach out to some one to help me with my abilities I posses with talking and communicating with spirits I have had this for two years now. There main mode of communication is hitting my arm that feel likes water drops which means yes and my leg for no, that’s just getting started, I can feel there feelings and sometimes there emotions running thru me, they love messing with electronics, they love Facebook, and especially music, I can sometimes tell if they were female or male when they were human, I get hot and thirsty all the time, I get bad headaches in the center of my forehead a lot.

    • Craig Hamilton-Parker Jan 21, 2016, 2:16 pm

The first thing you need to establish is if these are real communications from the dead or simply your own fears. I would suggest that you visit your local Spiritualist Church to witness how mediumship works and perhaps join their awareness circle to see if you have any gifts yourself.

Theresa Caputo talks non stop so how can she hear spirits and say they told me this or that – you’re like “when did they say that – there’s no time to even think about what they spirits say.

According to my grandmother, I come from a line a mediums. She’s one, my mom and her sisters are mediums, and I am too. And she says I’m the strongest one. But the problem is that none of us but my grandmother (who has been not much help) are really ‘connected’, I guess I could say. When I was younger I had experiences with spirits but they were experiences out of my control. So it made me scared and I guess I just blocked it in a way. All I have left of it is sensing when a place or item has a spirit connected to it. Do you have any advice to make my connection to spirits stronger to the point I can communicate with them? And is there anything I should be careful about? I would be deeply grateful to read what you have to say.

    • Craig Hamilton-Parker Sep 21, 2015, 9:46 am

The best place to learn to become a medium is at a Spiritualist Church. We have one in most towns in the UK and you have some in the USA too. The other alternative is to sit in a circle. I have written about this extensively and explained how to set up a home circle in my book called Psychic School

Have you had communication from a spirit who had died with advanced Alzheimer Disease? If so how are lost memories recovered?

    • Craig Hamilton-Parker Jun 29, 2015, 1:04 pm

Yes many times – in all cases they say their memory and sense of personality has returned and they have proved this through their messages etc. The brain is an organ of communication – memories are retained by the spirit body.

    Hi,
Your site is very interesting and also all that you say. Sadly last year I lost my Father. A month after the loss of my Father I felt that he left me a sign which only My Father would know meant anything to me. I won’t tell what that sign was. I was told I could speak with him via a spiritualist but I do have my doubts…… I do believe in ghosts/spirits as I feel I have had a few experiences over the years and there is no doubt in my mind of that experience. I had my last experience a few years in a house I lived. I wasn’t frightened but was aware of the presence. One night the ghost/spirit sat on my bed, (as I was about to sleep) I felt this and the ghost leaned over and stroked my forehead gently. At that point I was terrified (sweating and my body froze) and passed out. I regret that as I would have liked to see who it was. I lived in this house for nearly 2 years. Why did it take so long the for ghost/spirit to acknowledge it presence and why would it stoke my forehead? I look forward to hearing from you
    Helen

Recently while on the verge of sleep I have felt a strong sudden pressure on my feet, waking me with a start. This has happened several times. Then the other night I felt a sudden push down on my left hand. No idea who (if indeed it was an entity) it could be. My parents have passed over plus my son in very tragic circumstances. I frequently dream I am trying to contact my mother and I also dream of my son as a little boy of eight or so. I wonder if I can identify who is trying to contact me?

Thank you for your response. I am very interested in the chat room and look forward to it. As much as I would like the readings, it is difficult to get them as I live overseas and was told they can’t get it for me. On my next trip home I will certainly get it. It is interesting to hear there is a name for what is happening. Thank you very much. Would you be able to please tell me how we can do it without the rescue circle? We do our prayer and all every time before we start.

Hello. Love your site. I learned a lot, thank you. I have correctly been using a ouija board for many years. I have a very good relationship with my regulars and am proud to say 90% of the time they are correct in what they say. Seven months ago I read that these are spirits that need help to move on and we can help them by telling them to go to the white light. Should I end up there after I die, I certainly would want someone to help me, so of course I did it: I sent the occasional strays that interrupted my sessions to the white light. All of them want to go. My regulars want to stay with me and perhaps one day will decide to go.

However, since I started to do this, the strays keep coming constantly one after the other. Some introduce themselves, some block my regulars and answer, in place of my regulars, lies and wrong answers, and let me believe I am speaking to mine. The young ones curse to get my attention.

While I really do want to help them I really miss my peaceful sessions with my regulars, and their so helpful answers to my questions. It is aggravating my regulars and is quite annoying.

I would really appreciate if perhaps you can tell me if there is some way I can set guidelines so I can have my wonderful sessions and at the end devote some time to sending the others to the white light they so want to go to? How would I do this?

Also, is there some way I can understand when the strays take over my regulars and are answering in their place? I thank you very much and hope you have a solution for us,as we really don’t want to stop using the ouija.

You are doing what in Spiritualism we would call a ‘Rescue Circle’. These are normally only done by well developed mediums of long standing who have a good knowledge of Spiritualism. A Ouija Board would not be used as it creates the sort of psychological and spiritual problems you have described.

I would suggest that you read some of the literature from Spiritualism about this sort of work and get some proper training or you will trigger many potentially frightening things which you clearly do not have the skill or knowledge to counter. We also have a number of knowledgeable Spiritualists working our free chat rooms who may be able to give you a little advice.
