The Basics:

Astrology is the study of the links between heavenly patterns and earthly events. To be specific, it is the positions of the Sun, Moon and planets in the sky that are meant to show how life on Earth is likely to develop.

Do the stars decide our destiny?

Taking a fatalistic approach to astrology is a little self-destructive as you will feel that there is nothing to be done about your destiny. Most astrologers believe in free will and that the stars may set the path of our life but it is up to us how we travel over it. The eastern teacher Yogananda use to get his pupils to do rituals and ceremonies at inauspicious times to help them to understand that the power of the human spirit is greater than the pull of the stars. He also spoke about the problems many charlatans cause: “Charlatans have brought the stellar science to its present state of disrepute. Astrology is too vast, both mathematically  and philosophically, to be rightly grasped except by men of profound understanding. If ignoramuses misread the heavens, and see there a scrawl instead of a script, that is to be expected in this imperfect world. One should not dismiss the wisdom with the ‘wise.’”

We offer astrology services by phone on this site but there are also many useful organisation and bodies that will help you to find a qualified astrologer. A good placed to start is The National Council for Geocosmic Research. It is a non-profit organization dedicated to raising the standards of astrological education and research and certification as an astrologer. They should be able to put you in touch with someone credible.

What do sceptics say about astrology?

Sceptics believe that what astrology has to say is so general that it could apply to anyone. When reading a horoscope people make the forecasts and predictions fit and ignore anything that does not seem true for them. For Sun Sign Astrology in particular they ask: What is the likelihood that one-twelfth of the world’s population is having the same kind of day? But of course the astrologer will respond with the point that the horoscopes we read in the newspapers are not true astrology: this was a media stunt introduced in the 1930’s and – apart from a bit of amusement – has nothing to do with real astrology.

Are astrologers clairvoyant?

In most cases astrologers have no psychic skills. Astrology is a system which you can learn; clairvoyance is a gift that your are born with, or which may develop on its own or with training. Astrologers often use their intuition when interpreting a horoscope.

Astrology is an interpretative skill. In the press the predictions made are very general and of course cannot apply to everyone. They tend to show the mood of the day rather than specific prediction for your sun sign. And it is possible to interpret things in different ways. For example, suppose the Sun and the planet Mercury appear side-by-side in the zodiac sign of Gemini. One astrologer may interpret this as a journey, another news of a letter and a third may read it as speaking at a public meeting. All of them express the Geminian principle of communication, movement and a need for movement.

Many studies have shown that the gravitational pull of the Moon and the phases of the Moon can affect the human condition. This is known as the ‘Lunar Effect’. It influences a woman’s menstrual cycle, our sleep patterns, reproductive behaviour, birth rate, law and order and even mental health. (the word Lunatic and Lunacy derives from lunaticus meaning “of the moon” or “moonstruck”.) The gravitational pull of the other planets and the cosmic rays of the Sun may all follow cycles that influence human life in a similar way. Many astrologers also believe that the planets and stars also reflect a divine order and the divine plan of God.

What do horoscopes tell you?

A horoscope is a forecast of a person’s future based upon the relative positions of the moon, planets and stars at the time of the person’s birth. This is used to show qualities of the person’s character, situation and circumstances now and in the future. Astrologers argue that the horoscope reveals the paths and map of our life ahead but our journey across it and whether we find good or bad fortune on the route is determined by our free will.  Most astrologers say that destiny is not fixed.
