Meditation Goals - psychic powers in meditation
“The bottom of a lake we cannot see, because its surface is covered with ripples. It is only possible for us to catch a glimpse of the bottom, when the ripples have subsided, and the water is calm. If the water is muddy or is agitated all the time, the bottom will not be seen. If it is clear, and there are no waves, we shall see the bottom. The bottom of the lake is our own true Self; the lake is the Chitta [mind-stuff] and the waves the Vrittis [thought-waves].”

Psychic Medium Craig Hamilton-Parker talks about meditation and psychic powers. What are the true goals of meditation and how should mediums and psychics use meditation as part of their spiritual work?
The objective of meditation is to realise your God nature. On the way to this goal you may find various treasures on the path such as enhanced health, sharper mentality and extrasensory powers. Meditation takes us beyond theoretical knowledge to the direct realisation of the nature of existence.
Meditation teachings say we are already one with God but we are like a person that has fallen asleep to this fact. Without the realisation of our God nature we experience suffering because we are trapped in the illusionary dream of separateness. We need to wake up. In our delusion we believe that the material world is the only reality and may pray to God as if ‘He’ – like the objective world - is external to ourselves. Meditation gives you a tool that can cut through this illusion. It enables you to go straight to the boss without any doctrine, priest or guru go-betweens. Meditation awakens you to the fact that you are the only person who can realise your God nature. Nobody else can be enlightened for you. You are in charge of your spiritual destiny.
Meditation is a sure fire way to quicken the spirit. We will all naturally attain the goal of spiritual perfection but for most people it will take many lifetimes. Nature works as a slow process over millions of years and likewise our spiritual nature evolves gradually. Fortunately we are not stuck with a long wait, for we can cultivate our spirit through meditation, unlock the yoke of ignorance and be free to realize our God nature in this lifetime. What we do for ourselves will also help the world for with agriculture came civilisation and with spiritual ‘agriculture’ will come Utopia.
Psychic powers are not the goal of meditation but are jewels that you discover on your path to perfection. Like the talents in the story of the prodigal son, they are eventually returned to the father. Through meditation you can develop your talents and multiply them through service to others. If psychic powers are cultivated in this spirit of service they will become very powerful and incorruptible. So when using meditation to push forward your gifts, remember that they are not the final goal of your journey. They are loaned to you. You are working to become a medium, who is the conduit, not the possessor, of the power. The goal is spirituality. Mediumship is service to this spirituality.
