Meditation Practices for Mediums.
Psychic Medium Craig Hamilton-Parker talks about meditation practices and how mediums can use mediation techniques in their spiritual development circles.
Meditation Practices and psychic powers
Meditation is a natural state that you have probably already experienced without knowing it. Have you ever read a book or novel and been so totally immersed that you forgot you were reading? This is a little like meditation. It is a feeling of being absorbed, attentive and sharply conscious. The same may have happened when listening to music. The music takes you away ‘somewhere else’ and for a while you are in a meditative state. It can also happen when you are in a relaxed state while doing something creative or enjoying looking at a beautiful scene. It comes when you are peacefully engrossed in what you are doing. You know the state already.
Ideas cannot come to us when our mind swirls with hectic thoughts. Similarly, psychic and mediumistic insight cannot penetrate an agitated mind. To be aware of these things we need to achieve an inner quietude. Meditation achieves this state by calm, inner observation. It is very easy. All you need to do is sit comfortably, withdraw your attention from the day-to-day world, and give yourself a little time with your spirit. Do not be put off by the multitude of techniques available, for meditation is a natural state and can be experienced without strenuous effort. What matters is that you allow yourself to go within and observe.
Meditation is essential at the early stages of spiritual development but also important throughout your life as a medium. Meditation spiritualises your work and helps to remove the hubris- the subtle of spiritual arrogance that comes when mediums forget they are not the possessor but the custodians of the sacred power. It also helps you to become focused and energised and puts you in that special state of consciousness that is necessary for quality mediumship.
Meditation alone will not bring mediumship. You could meditate all of your life and the gift will still not arise if you are selfish, insensitive, egotistical, opinionated or materialistic. However with meditation usually comes a greater degree of self-awareness and the opportunity to improve ourselves, thereby clearing the ground for the spiritual seeds to be sown.
MEDITATION PRACTICE AND THE AURA
Although a medium experiences the same inner states as in traditional meditation our remit and methodology is slightly different. We recognise that meditation is a tool for self-realisation yet we also know it can be used as way to develop mediumship. As I have explained the seeking of psychic powers for their own sake is a blind path and there are mediums that have cheated at physical mediumship or fallen into the trap of egotism that comes when God’s power is mistaken for personal power. In particular some mediums can become petty or jealous of one another. This is a wicked path that eventually brings ruin.
So long as you embark on this journey in a spirit of modesty and compassion and maintain this throughout your work you will not stumble. In fact the vast majority of mediums have integrity and are sincere in their work. They are lovely people.
The meditation we use for the development of mediumship has many similarities to kundalini yoga but without the severe aestheticism or complicated postures. As in Kundalini yoga we awaken the energy at the base of the spine and take it to the top of the head. To do this we draw upon the power of the aura and its energy centres called the chakras which I will now describe in some detail before explaining psychic meditation in detail.
AUTHORS COMMENT: The full technique for moving the light of the spine is explained in my book 'Opening to the Other Side'. We use a similar technique to those found in Kriya yoga but with less emphasis on the special breathing techniques. The teachings of the Spirit guides are in my opinion very similar to those passed down through the lineage of the Himalayan yogis. I believe Spiritualism could learn a great deal from the East and mediumship could progress even further if we embrace some of the ancient teaching of the Rishis and Babaji.
