IS THERE A HELL?
When Christianity spread throughout Europe it supplant the ancient pagan gods and built its churches upon their most sacred sites. Everything associated with these old religions was branded as evil. For example, traditionally Pan was the cloven footed god of fertility who brought happiness and jollity. To supplant him the Christians portrayed him as the devil and lord of Hell.
There is no inescapable Hell as such but Spiritualists believe that the afterlife consists of many spheres of existence some of which are 'lower' planes. All souls are innately divine but can become corrupted by their evil deeds. The heaviness of their vibration makes them sink like a stone to the lower spheres. Here they are guided by wise souls to reform their ways and, in time, given another chance at life- possibly in animal form.
It is interesting to note how close Spiritualist ideas are to the Hindu beliefs. In the Vedas there is no mention of hell but in the Puranas (the later books) these regions are described in detail. Here the bad karma is worked out through pain and suffering but mercifully the offender is finally given another chance at life on earth.
