What is the reason for suffering?
Joy lead to complacency and often sorrow is our greatest teacher. Both come to us because of the karma generated by our actions. However, the middle way leads to realisation of our divinity and the release from suffering as beautifully expressed by the poet William Blake: "Man was made for joy and woe, And when this we rightly know, Safely through the world we go."
So, in my opinion the purpose of suffering is to enable us to grow. When we seek divinity and spiritual growth then the need for new suffering falls away. We do however continue to suffer from the karma of our former lives but eventually suffering will cease.
