Using Crystals for Psychic Protection
“Every discolouration of the stone, Every accidental crack or dent, Seems a water-course or an avalanche, Or lofty slope where it still snows. W. B. YEATS (from Lapis Lazuli)

Current interest in the healing and protective power of crystals can be traced to some writings about American psychic Edgar Cayce and many scattered references to crystals in his readings. Edgar Cayce (1877-1945) was one of the most influential psychics of all time. When he died, he left a unique resource; complete transcripts of over 1600 readings given in the last decades of his life to hundreds of people who came to him for help and advice. Cayce considered lapis lazuli to be one of the most important stones for protection. While in trance, he is recorded as saying “… the lapis ligurius would bring much that will act in a way as would be termed a protective influence if kept about the entity” (1931-1 M.20 born 9/11/19). In fact, Lapis Lazuli is the most often mentioned gem material in the Cayce readings, and can have a number of spiritual qualities. Cayce speaks of how the high electrical vibration of this gem material can strengthen and aid the person as well as create a better relationship between the mental and spiritual selves. It is also said to bring live vitality and healing. (Cayce also recommended beryl and scarab for their protective qualities)
It is interesting to note that the ancient cultures of India also believe that adverse influences can be countered in some instances by wearing certain gems, stones or metals. The Indian master Yogananda received these interesting words of advice from his own master Sri Yukteswar:
“Just as a house may be fitted with a copper rod to absorb the shock of lightning, so the bodily temple can be protected in certain ways.
Electrical and magnetic radiations are ceaselessly circulating in the universe; they affect man’s body for good and ill. Ages ago our rishis pondered the problem of combating the adverse effects of subtle cosmic influences. The sages discovered that pure metals emit an astral light, which is powerfully counter-active to negative influences of the planets. Certain plant combinations were also found helpful. Most effective of all are faultless jewels of not less than two carats.
The practical preventative uses of astrology have seldom been seriously studied outside of India. One little-known fact is that the proper jewels, metals and plant preparations are valueless unless the required weight secured and unless the remedial agent is worn next to the skin….
For general purposes, I counsel the use of armlets made of gold, silver, and copper. But for a specific purpose I want you to get one of silver and lead.”
In recent years, these ideas have resurfaced. I am in contact with many people who experiment with the properties of materials, trying to find ways to use as protection from not only earth energies but vibrations and rays projected from machinery and domestic appliances. Computers and mobile phones are said to be particularly dangerous to our health. A colleague of mine, who experiments with Kirlian photography, has found that the aura appears shattered if photographed while using a mobile phone or computer. I feel that further study is necessary to rule out whether it is the equipment itself being influenced by the pulses from a mobile phone. Nonetheless, the first results are interesting. Findings show that one of the best protective materials against this type of influence is black tourmaline. It appears to safeguard the aura.
In addition to crystals, gems, and metals, some practitioners use leaves, flowers, shells, tree and plant essences, and other natural objects to work on the energy. Earth acupuncture is also the perfect complement to space healing. After identifying areas of negativity, a space healer may use offerings of flowers, candles, incense, and holy water and use them to create a better ambience in a room. At my spiritual circle, we sometimes clear the space by ringing a Balinese temple bell in each corner of the room. If a bell is not available, clapping at “stagnant” areas, such as corners or in spaces below tables, will lift the energy in these places. After using sound, we burn frankincense in a special burner and swing it into the proper areas. We then play relaxing music and arrange the lighting so that the environment is fully cleansed and maintains harmony. When this is done in advance of a spiritual circle or demonstration of mediumship, we notice a definite improvement in the energies of the room.
Fragrance has been used for centuries as a means of clearing negative energy. The most popular today are cedar wood, pine, and juniper. In Arabia, frankincense is burned to clear a house of bad spirits. Juniper and rosemary served the same purpose in Mediaeval Europe. Native Americans also burned juniper to remove evil spirits, because the aroma of burning sweet-grass or sage purifies the energies and attracts benign spirits. Similarly, in Tibet, juniper is offered to good spirits, and in the Chinese Feng Shui spirit-placating rite of tun fu, incense is used.
In a similar vein, some scented oils are considered to protect an individual from negative vibrations. For example, civit is a rich, musk-like fragrance that can be rubbed on to the hands or used to anoint the feet. Cyclamen is supposed to strengthen men and protect families. Myrrh, which was brought by the Magi to the baby Jesus, is an ancient protection of the Nature Deities. Many people today rub this oil into their foreheads as a protection against evil. Similarly oak moss, when rubbed around a doorway, is said to prevent evil from entering, and it will bring harmony to the home or workplace.
Other protective oils include sandalwood, which guards a person working with clairvoyance and safeguards them from interference from hostile elementals or mischievous nature spirits. Similarly, verbena added to a bath will remove negativity. A little verbena oil added to a black candle will fill a room with a sense of safety and protection. Similarly wormwood can be worn for protection or added to a “reversing candle.” These half red/half black candles are claimed to “turn any situation around,” making generators of trouble see the error of their ways.
Many of these fragrances are used along with crystals and other techniques described above to improve positive energy in an environment.
